Six precautions for roller rolling asphalt mixture pavement on ramp
November 9th, 2021
When using roller to roll asphalt mixture pavement on up and down ramps, pay attention to the following points:
① Whether it is uphill or downhill, the lower layer of asphalt mixture must be clean and dry, and the asphalt binding layer must be sprayed to prevent the mixture from sliding during rolling.

② Whether rolling uphill or downhill, the driving wheel of the roller shall be behind. This has the following advantages: when going uphill, the rear driving wheel can bear the driving force provided by the ramp and the machine itself, and the front wheel preliminarily compacts the road surface to bear the large shear force generated by the driving wheel; When going downhill, the impact force generated by the self weight of the roller is offset by the braking of the driving wheel. Only the mixture rolled by the front wheel has the ability to support the rear driving wheel to generate shear force.

③ When rolling uphill, the roller shall start, stop and accelerate smoothly to avoid too high or too low speed.
④ Before rolling uphill, the mixture shall be cooled to the specified lower limit temperature, and then static preloading shall be carried out. Vibratory compaction shall not be adopted until the mixture temperature drops to the lower limit (120 ℃).
⑤ Sudden speed change and braking shall be avoided for downhill rolling.
⑥ When rolling downhill with very steep gradient, light roller shall be used for pre compaction, and then heavy roller or vibratory roller shall be used for compaction.
